It can be difficult to figure out everything that needs to be done before spring. We have compiled a list of the five best ways to prepare your yard for spring.
-
Clean up the remaining leaves from landscaping beds and lawn. Leaves left on the lawn can cause the grass to be smothered and die.
-
Tear out dead bushes, and cut down dead perennials and ornamental grass.
-
Apply mulch to your landscaping beds before weeds start to grow. Break up any existing mulch before applying new mulch to allow proper drainage in the beds. After a couple of years, some of the old mulch may need to be removed once it is matted down too much. Mulch should be 3 inches thick to prevent weeds from germinating.
-
Downey Lawn Care LLC gets locally sourced mulch made from your fellow neighbors’ yard waste instead of store-bought bags that contain plastic bits and ground-up 2 x 4 lumber.
-
Be careful when mulching around trees. If a lot of mulch surrounds the trunk of the tree, too much moisture leads to rot and decay and can kill the tree. Mulch should not be built up around the trunk.

Put down weed block fabric (SRW Weedblock Fabric) in landscaping beds underneath mulch and rocks to prevent weeds. Pictured above

Sprinkle Preen on top of mulch and rocks in landscaping beds to help prevent weeds. Preen can stop over 200 broadleaf and grassy weeds from sprouting for up to three months.
