West County has many beautiful, green lawns. Other areas in St. Louis can achieve lawns as great as theirs by following a few guidelines.

  • Grass should be cut at a height of 3.0 inches or higher. This allows deeper grass roots, so during times of drought your grass can absorb enough water.

  • Fertilizing helps create the right balance of nutrients in the soil. This promotes insect and disease resistance and helps your lawn withstand extreme cold, heat, and drought. Fertilizing may also prevent many aggravating weeds by thickening your lawn.

  • Dethatching is necessary for zoysia and bermuda grasses. These grasses spread by using rhizomes (underground stems) that build up over time preventing air, water, and nutrients from reaching the soil.

  • Aerating helps air, water, and nutrients to infiltrate the soil. It also provides the perfect microclimate for overseeding.

  • Overseeding, applying seed to your lawn in the fall, will increase the thickness of your lawn and help reduce erosion of bare spots where no grass is growing.

  • In the fall, leaves need to be removed from your lawn. Leaves can smother the grass over the winter and your grass could die, leaving your lawn with bare patches when spring comes.

  • During the summer, your lawn needs at least one inch of water per week. Water your lawn when we have little or no rain to keep your grass healthy.
